The ColDock Whiz

Specialized Cable Layer Drydocking Completed

Colombo Dockyard recently completed its first-ever drydocking of a highly specialized cable lay vessel. This landmark project extended beyond routine maintenance to include advanced system installations, major mechanical overhauls, structural repairs, and accommodation refurbishments. The successful execution of this complex scope underscores the shipyard’s readiness to handle intricate, high-value repairs and has already led to discussions around potential newbuild projects of similar scale.

This milestone not only reinforces Colombo Dockyard’s technical capability but also strengthens its role as a trusted service provider for niche vessel types in the global marine sector.

Milestones in Eco-Friendly Shipbuilding

Parallel to its repair operations, Colombo Dockyard marked two key moments in its ongoing shipbuilding program: the delivery of another vessel in a multi-unit, environmentally friendly series, and the keel laying of a new vessel in the same line. These vessels reflect the shipyard’s commitment to sustainability, energy efficiency, and quality craftsmanship, catering to the needs of modern, eco-conscious fleet operators around the world.

Offshore Vessel Maintenance and Trusted Partnerships

The shipyard continues to build on its reputation for dependable offshore vessel services. A recent drydocking of an offshore supply vessel for a long-term European client included routine maintenance tasks, critical system servicing, and mechanical repairs. As a preferred choice for repeat clients, Colombo Dockyard remains focused on tailoring its solutions to operational requirements with precision and efficiency.

Underwater Innovation: Fourth Structure Delivered to the Maldives

In a stunning showcase of marine engineering, Colombo Dockyard recently completed the delivery of an underwater restaurant to a luxury resort development in the Maldives. This marks the fourth underwater structure constructed by the shipyard for the region, following previous successes such as an underwater art gallery and other submerged experiences.

Designed and fabricated by Colombo Dockyard’s Heavy Engineering Department, the structure demonstrates the yard’s capability to execute visionary projects that combine architectural elegance with robust marine engineering. The department’s broader portfolio includes gas storage spheres, bridges, tank farms, and other large-scale industrial infrastructure, further solidifying its place as a leader in marine and structural innovation.

Rapid Afloat Repairs in Strategic Ports

Leveraging its capabilities at Colombo and Hambantota, Colombo Dockyard continues to offer rapid-response afloat repairs. Recent projects included urgent structural and mechanical interventions for commercial vessels at anchorage, helping minimize downtime and keep fleets on schedule. With repair teams also active in Trincomalee and Galle, the yard ensures on-site adaptability and reliability wherever it’s needed.

ISO Certification Reaffirmed for Health, Safety, and Environment

Further emphasizing its commitment to operational excellence, Colombo Dockyard has successfully completed its ISO certification renewal audit for Occupational Health & Safety (ISO 45001:2018) and Environmental Management Systems (ISO 14001:2015). The audit, conducted over 12 man-days, covered all shipbuilding, repair, and heavy engineering operations and reaffirmed the shipyard’s alignment with international HSE best practices.

Sri Lanka’s Maritime Growth in a Booming Tourism Climate

These achievements come at a time when Sri Lanka is gaining global recognition as a leading travel destination, adding momentum to the country’s maritime and hospitality-linked infrastructure development. Colombo Dockyard’s contributions, including luxury marine structures and sustainable shipping solutions, play a key role in shaping this growth.

As an official representative of Colombo Dockyard PLC, UW Group is proud to celebrate this series of major achievements that reflect their growing influence in the global maritime, offshore, and engineering industries.
